So much to update, so little time. I will endeavor to sum things up far more quickly than they deserve.

First: Akito the Puppy.

He and I are both learning a lot. I think I've figured out the majority of his heritage. He's mostly Australian Cattle Dog (probably with a bit of extra dingo in him to explain the color), but German Shepherd across the top and in the teeth. Still can't figure out what makes his back fur wavy, though. ACDs, as it turns out, are the only dog breed specifically bred to bite. It's part of the whole "herding cattle in the Outback" job. Akito's a smart one, though. Last week, when I tried to wake him up early, he took one look at me, then at the light I had turned on, rotated his head around, grabbed the blanket between his teeth, and pulled it over his eyes. So cute!

Akito met my parents on Friday, and of course, it was love at first sight. Mom has an incredible gift with puppies. She had him whipped into shape in no time. I'm desperately trying to follow her example to keep from getting chewed to death. Anyway, Akito loves my parents' huge backyard (compared to mine) and they ran him so ragged that he did little more than sleep until noonish on Saturday. The car still makes him nervous, but he fell asleep on the way home in spite of himself. He's also starting to get better about allowing me to read, which was going to be a major problem.

My Birthday

Spent most of the morning lounging around and reading. Finished Dune, finally, and will be giving it back to [livejournal.com profile] shadowpryde the next time I see her.

On rather short notice, a posse (18 or so) of us went to Beau Jo's for dinner last night. This really deserves its own entry, but my computer time is short due to the puppy. Much fun was had, cool presents abound, and I now have a DVD of Fraggle Rock as well as LOTR Trivial Pursuit. This brings my party game total to three. People will need to come over at some point. Many of us then caravanned over to Erik's birthday party, where more fun was had.

Many potential things on tap for today. In reality, few of them will happen. The one thing I'm certain of is going to the "How to Live with Your Dog" class from the Humane Society. Could be interesting; could be a sales pitch for their training classes.

Must run. Akito's about to get himself in trouble.

Fraggle Rock!!!!!! Too cool.

Best of luck with the pup. My aunt has two Australian Cattle Dogs. And they are SO SO smart. Her's have been difficult, but I'm sure training will do wonders, for both of you :P

Oh, curses! I just looked at the e-mail, and I sent it to your hotmail account, not gmail. Grr...arg.

Nothing came to my hotmail either, and I usually go over it with a fine toothed comb, so maybe it got lost in the ether somewhere.

Happy birthday, though. If you have another party, I'll definitely be there!~

oooh... Australian Cattle Dog... does he have the herding instict? I have some friends with one and he herds everything (kids, my greyhounds, etc).

A tired puppy is a happy puppy.

I went through the petsmart basic training class with one of my dogs. It was good. A lot of fun, a chance to bond with your pet, and it was pretty cheap too. ;)

Definitely take your pup on car rides to get him used to it when he's young.

Good luck... you should post some pictures. :)

Does he ever have the herding instinct! Unfortunately, he usually tries to herd me. I'm trying to put a stop to it since herding me usually involves biting my lower legs and feet.

What method of training does Petsmart use? Last night I went to a two-hour sales pitch for the Humane Society's clicker training courses, and have developed an intense dislike of that method and the trainer who was teaching the class. I'm now looking around for non-clicker-based training. If nothing else, Akito needs the socialization with other dogs.

I think the type of training depends some on the trainer. Each petsmart has their own
trainers, so it can vary. The one I go to (104th and I25) the trainer is great, and
doesn't use clickers (at least not in the basic class).

You might go by your local petsmart, ask to sit in on a class and see how they do.
