Alas, this will be a bit shorter on details than I would like (especially since my brain is likely to lose the details by the time the weekend is over), but it's late enough as it is.

The first event of the reunion was a tour of the school, given by a teacher who's only been around for ~3 years and some girl from the current student government. About 15 or so class of '96-ers showed up for this, and a couple of them were spouses of graduates. Only two of them were people I ever knew back in school, and even then, not well. So lacking anyone interesting among the students, I wanted to see my old teachers. It's scary how many of them have retired, mostly in the past couple of years! I did get to see Mrs. Kleve, my sophomore-year English teacher, who also helped us with our valedictorian speech for graduation. She is now the head of the counseling department. I also saw Mrs. Wermers very briefly, before she had to dash back to her class of freshmen, shouting over her shoulder her e-mail address. Definitely need to talk with her some more. She was super-cool back in the day. The odd thing was that I spent most of my time there with my sophomore-year Spanish teacher, Mrs. Walker. She was always kind of off the wall, and still is, but she did everything she could to help me track down old teachers and tell me what happened to the ones she knew about. I now have phone numbers for Mrs. Martine (my AP Spanish teacher who was like a second mom to me), and Mr. Fox (my AP physics teacher who went above and beyond the call of duty for his AP students). Mr. Fox retired last year, and is in Maine right now on a sailing trip.

When I got back to my parents' house, I told them all about the teachers and where they were now, and my mom said something that kind of hit me weird: this is really my last chance to meet up with any of my old teachers. I mean, it makes sense when you think about it. Reunions only happen once per decade, and none of my teachers were super-young to begin with. I was shocked by how few teachers I knew were left, and it somehow amazes me that in another ten years, none of them will be around anymore! When you're a kid in school, teachers seem like such permanent fixtures, but as an adult, you start to realize that they have lives of their own, and no one lives forever.

On a much less melancholy note, it's good to know that my skills at Hallway Commando have not atrophied over recent years of disuse.

Tomorrow evening is the big reunion reception, followed by a family picnic on Sunday. I won't have computer access between those two events, so my next post won't come before Sunday (and I'm really going to try to post about the rest of this weekend, honest!).
