Dang, That Was Fun!
Jul. 14th, 2004 11:41 pmAs if I didn't have enough to do already, I've taken on a new hobby: role-playing. Yes, I found out a few weeks ago that a friend of mine was involved in a Harry Potter RPG, and I just so happened to fit a role they were trying to fill. Tonight was my first night. I will narrate the adventures of my character for those who care to read on.
Nicole de l'Encre (bonus points to anyone who can place where I got that name from) arrives at Hogwarts on the second day of the second week of term at 6:00am. She is rather tired after spending all night on the train and sleeping only poorly. Upon her arrival, Professor Flitwick meets with her. He informs Nicole that she will be in Ravenclaw House, as that is the closest equivalent to her house at Beauxbatons, where she had spent her first week of magical schooling. The professor shows her the Ravenclaw common room and her dormitory, then leads her down to the Great Hall for breakfast, and hands her her class schedule.
While sitting in quiet awe of the castle and its Great Hall, a first year Hufflepuff enters with hot pink letters over her head, saying that she is an idiot for pissing off Peeves. The Great Hall erupts with laughter. The unfortunate Hufflepuff is taken from the hall by a professor.
After breakfast, Nicole wanders the castle in search of her first class: Defense Against the Dark Arts. She gets caught on a moving staircase and is five minutes late by the time she finds her class. Professor Harry Potter takes no special notice of her and continues teaching a lesson on vampires. He assigns the class some homework that involves researching vampires.
Defense Against the Dark Arts is why Nicole is here. She is a pureblood, but of mixed nationality. Her mother went to Hogwarts, but her father attended Beauxbatons. Nicole was accepted to both schools. She started at Beauxbatons, but through letters in her first week of term, she informed her parents that Beauxbatons no longer taught Defense Against the Dark Arts. At the same time, it was revealed that Harry Potter had just taken up that post at Hogwarts. After a major row, they decided that Nicole should transfer. Word got around, and a fifth year prefect at Beauxbatons took Nicole aside for a talk. This prefect, who worked with the first year students so already sort of knew Nicole, was concerned about her younger sister, a first year student at Hogwarts. The younger sister wasn't too bright, and was prone to getting herself in trouble. The prefect asked Nicole to look after her unfortunate younger sister. Nicole agreed. As it turned out, this younger sister was Elizabeth Sanchez, the unfortunate Hufflepuff Nicole saw at breakfast on her first day. Nicole began to wonder what she had gotten herself into.
Nicole meets the other students, and gets along with them fairly well for her first day. She tags up with a specific group and they help her get to her classes. Elizabeth invites Nicole to a party after dinner in the Hufflepuff common room. Nicole, eager to meet new people, and in an attempt to look after Elizabeth like her sister had asked, agrees.
Transfiguration and Charms classes pass without incident. Nicole follows her newfound group to lunch, but they enter a room separate from the Great Hall. In the confusion, Nicole learns that this group hangs out together because they are all in a form of detention, which requires them to solve a mystery of who or what is killing centaurs in the Forbidden Forest. There's also something about a creature coming into the castle, but Nicole is already in over her head. Alessa Malfoy informs Nicole that she is now committed to helping out since they are the only ones who know about these attacks.
After lunch, Nicole and Elizabeth go to History of Magic while the rest skive off in search of their friend Etta Borowicki, who disappeared after Defense Against the Dark Arts. Elizabeth falls asleep quickly as does the rest of the class, but Nicole pays attention and takes notes. Professor Binns might be boring, but the life of Merlin certainly isn't.
During afternoon free time, Nicole decides to head to the library to do her homework. Neither she nor Elizabeth knows how to get there, however. Elizabeth then summons the ghost of Hufflepuff House, Cedric Diggory, to help them out, and he does. Unfortunately, Elizabeth has something of a crush on Cedric. Nicole gets her homework done while Elizabeth chats with the ghost, saying she'll do her homework later. While in the library, Nicole hears a voice shout, "NIGEL!!!" The voice rattles the tables and knocks a few books over. The source of the shout is unknown.
That evening, signs appear in every common room and on every door exiting the castle: "Until further notice, no students are to venture outside the castle walls. Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures, and Quidditch are cancelled."
Everyone said I did quite well, and stayed in character! I earned experience points in stamina, strength, charisma, and luck. After some initial problems, I figured out how the dice rolls worked. I need to get myself 10 d10. Ooh, this is an excuse to go to Into the Wind! I also feel the need to make myself a dice bag.
Thus, I earn myself more geek points. And now, it is past midnight, and I must sleep.
