I just saw the movie Some Like It Hot with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. Now I know why my mom never showed me Marilyn Monroe movies and I hope to never see one again. Gads! I mean, I try not to be overly PC about things, and I like to think I can take a joke, but the attitudes were just horrifying. If it wasn't so late, I'd call my mom right now and thank her personally for any role she might have played in the Women's Movement in the 1960s. *Shudder* Welcome to my personal pet peeve about stupidity.

Right now, I don't care if I ever date again, so long as I get to keep my brain. *hugs engineering textbooks*

Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] illyanarasputin, but that movie just hurt me.

Edit: Jodie Foster has made it all better.

Monroe sure excelled at playing the bimbo...

I'm sorry that you couldn't enjoy the movie....
If you have a chance read Ebert's review:
http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/greatmovies/somelikeithot.html
I think it important to remember that this was a comedy, and it uses larger-than-life impossible characters to comedic affect. And look at the way everyone is trying to dupe everyone!
Maybe you need to see the apartment, maybe not. I guess being a crazy film person I'm able to see Monroe for what she was and enjoy the film because of that, not in spite of it (this isn't to say ho-ho ho I'm a better film goer, not at all: I mean look at the way I couldn't get over myself to enjoy ROTK....)
Really what I'm trying to say is that Monroe was in no way held up as "the ideal woman" in the way of: this is what a woman should be and how she should act; she's the same role that Cameron Diaz plays in Something About Mary and the like, although I think Monroe's presence and just sheer Star Powa makes her intreging.
Also I think there's a definate statement about how women are treated; after all we get two men being treated like women and not liking it very much. One would hope that this would make them modify their behaviors later...this is making me think of a film and now I can't remember what it is. Or maybe I'm thinking of Lucifer when he turns into a woman...of course that's a whole nother thing.
Which Jodie Foster? (NOT Taxi Driver I will assume)

I've been rather anti-comedy for the past few years, so I'm very picky about which ones I watch. Movies about bimbos don't interest me at all. I've never seen There's Something About Mary because I know I'll hate it. Heck, I was even at a party once where that movie got put on in the background and I turned my back to it and talked to people so I wouldn't catch part by accident.

I had an interesting chat with my mom this morning about the movie. She was never a Marilyn Monroe fan either, but not having modern depictions of women to compare to, she mostly found these films uninteresting as opposed to insulting. I think I finally understand why Mom likes Doris Day so much. Those movies might be utter camp, but at least the blonde isn't an airhead.

I watch very few movies from the point of view of a critic. I want to enjoy the plot, or identify with a character, or something. As a modern female, I have difficulty sympathizing with 1950s adolescent male fantasies.

I'm guessing Contact... I think it got edited, but I thought I saw something earlier that made me believe that.

Oh, there it is. Under current music. That's what made me think it was Contact. Will have more to say in general about the movie when I form more coherent thoughts.

geeks and embarrassment

I have often found that I don't like any movie that's humor seems based on embarrassment... ie, some character does stupid or innapproprate things and everyone else points and laughs.
Wonder if it's just me, or if other geeks in general don't like that kind of movie (possibly due to being the one in real life who was laughed at).
Something about mary is one of those kinds of movies IIRC.
contact rules. The book is excellent as well.

I can sympathize with those fanatisies quite easily.
So can Bowhay.

So can all men. Even gay ones. Most gay men that I know (and I knew quite a few in college @w@) loved Marilyn Monroe. Not because she was a bimbo on the screen, but because she was able to get as far as she did doing with what she had at the time. That and she's probably one of the most beautiful women to have existed by photographic history.

I don't condone objectifying women, even though I happen to enjoy my Playboy (they have great articles). However, there's something to be said for understanding a movie in context and going beyond what may offend you.

I wish I could have been there to see the movie. I haven't seen anything beyond the seven year itch, and I would have enjoyed seeing it. I know I would have enjoyed it; but then again, I guess I'm typically male.

Thank god I have an understanding fiancee, I guess.

Hey...

Man, the browser is doing wacky things. Sometimes it shows my comments, sometimes it doesn't. Even after a few clickings of refresh. Oh well, whatever.
